KEF Q300 Bookshelf Speakers

It’s a bit crazy to think that the KEF Q300 is KEF’s eighth generation of the Q series loudspeakers. These bookshelf speakers come from a long lineage of innovative and high performing designs. The latest version has seen tons of great updates and changes that really help take this speaker over the top.

Let’s start with the design. The Q300 measures 14 x 8.3 x 11.9 inches. It’s a two-way bass reflex design that follows its previous line of looks. It features a single 6.5″ Uni-Q driver on the face with a 1″ vented aluminum dome. This is the heart and soul of the speaker. The Uni-Q driver comes from a long line of Uni-Q drivers. In fact, the first one was designed back in 1988. The latest version that’s featured on the Q300 has a number of improvements over the last. The mid-range driver now has “Cone Breakup Control” that helps to reduce mid-range distortion. It has a longer throw motor and a more powerful magnet. It also has an aluminum wound coil instead of copper in order to reduce its weight. KEF also added a new feature called Z-Flex. It’s the ribbed design and it’s there to help with bass and mid-range. The design helps the speaker produce the crisp and responsive sound without flexing.

If you look at the tweeter in the center of the main driver, you’ll notice little blades. These are directional ‘tangerine’ wave guides. They’re said to improve the coupling between the tweeter dome and the air. We thought this was a neat little touch to the design.

For looks, the Q300 is made from recycled fiber wood. They come in a number of finishes, including English Cherry, Black Oak and European Walnut. They’re incredibly well constructed and build. They’re also very sturdy speakers.

For performance, the Q300 doesn’t fall short of great. We cranked the tunes up and only heard well rounded, incredibly accurate and full sound. The mid-range and highs were astonishing. The lows and bass was impressive. But we’d recommend a subwoofer with these speakers (and with all bookshelf speakers). A 6.5″ speaker just isn’t large enough to really hit the bass. These really are a great rounded pair of speakers.

To conclude, we would absolutely recommend the Q300. It’s great for all purposes, from movies to music and gaming. It’s a great looking, well-constructed and high performance bookshelf speaker
